I originally wrote Love and Mud Pies (and several other stories) on an old typewriter in the 1980s whilst living on a farm in Australia. I was inspired by a love of Andalusian horses and had several on the farm. I was involved in promoting the breed by performing traditional Spanish quadrille displays in a team of eight. The elegance of the Spanish horses, costumes, and music inspired me to write stories.
But as life became busier, I put my stories in a box in the closet. They remained in the box for some thirty years. It wasn't until I moved house in 2019 that I found the forgotten box. The ink had faded, but luckily - still legible. After some plot twists and a lot of editing, I chose Love and Mud Pies to release to the world. This story then blossomed into The Glenbloom Series.
Let me tell you about the old typewriter I had borrowed. When I say old - it had an ink ribbon. Once I had typed a row of words a bell sounded to let me know that I needed to push the return carriage to start a new line. Once the ink ribbon had reached the end of the reel, I had to spin the cartridge around with my finger to return to the beginning. I also had some white correction papers for any errors.
There was no internet, no word processor, no mobile phones and no computer. I was in my early twenties when I originally wrote Love and Mud Pies. I am now in my fifties.
I hope you have as much pleasure in my fictional world of The Glenbloom Series as I did writing it. I hope the characters take you on a magical journey of splendour, horses, love and mud pies.
Please leave me a comment at janetsmithauthor.com. I would love to know your thoughts on my work. It may encourage (or discourage) me from releasing the next one.

Laura had suffered three spells of misfortune.
First: The loneliest of childhoods. Laura had one friend. A boy who played mud pies with her at the back of her mother's shop in Glenbloom, Australia. His fleeting visits were full of love and mud pies. But unexpectedly, he stopped coming to the store. Horses were her best friends, as they don't understand deception or desertion.
Second: The divorce of Laura’s parents when she was twelve, then her mother's untimely death, then her father’s. More loneliness, more sorrow.
And third: the toxic relationship she had with a French man. They met in Europe at the height of her thriving modelling career. Initially, it was glorious. The devil was disguised as everything she wanted. He then took her wealth, health, and beauty. He carried her lifeless body into a Paris hospital like you would carry the rubbish out to the trash can. Then he vanished.
We meet Laura in 1985, on her return home to Glenbloom.

Glenbloom, Australia – 1972.
* The show-jumping competition - with dire consequences.
* ‘Watch jump six,’ Trent told twelve-year-old Michelle, ‘I don’t like it.’
* With sirens blaring, the ambulance raced towards the hospital.
* The mare’s life ended with two gunshots. Rodney sat frozen on the ground, his face - glazed over.
Fourteen-year void.
The accident left Michelle with a disfigured face and in a wheelchair. Fourteen years passed as she stared out her window, watching the seasons and years come and go like a revolving door.
Michelle felt compelled to decline Laura’s request to be her Maid of Honour. To have danced with the best man, handsome Trent, all night - feeling his arms around her and gazing into his caring eyes, but it was a dream, not a reality. When she declined, her shackled world laughed in her face. But Michelle wouldn't prevent Trent from a life with a non-disfigured woman, to her own detriment.
Michelle tried to keep her voice from wavering, ‘I can absolutely assure you, doctor - I am ready.'
‘I’m leaving Glenbloom in less than an hour.’
Forbidden love.
Rodney eyed his sister suspiciously. ‘You know that Trent can never be a romantic match for you!’ he told her. ‘He’s the local philander,’ said Rodney waving his arms in the air to emphasise the word. ‘I don’t want you getting hurt. He’s not a bad person, don’t get me wrong, but he is a womaniser,’ he warned. ‘He’s too old for you anyway, and I forbid it,’ he said as he strode out of the room.
* ‘I saw glimpses of hope for us, but I was torn between losing you or making you a hostage of my world.’
* ‘I love you,’ it was barely more than a whisper.
* ‘We have one hour left, I’m not going to waste it worrying about what your brother may do.’
* ‘We’ll find her, don’t worry,’ Lady Rosemary told Trent.
* ‘Get your hands off, my sister!’ Rodney roared.
* Trent pushed him backwards with two hands to his chest - then it was on!
